The Art of Writing Love Letters

Yes, writing love letters is an art. To some it may come naturally, but to many of us it seems difficult. To put our feelings down in words that adequately express what we wish to convey is not always easy. One of the first things required to write a good love letter is a little time. Make a quiet time. Plan it into your day allowing time to write slowly and thoughtfully. In years past many lovers would write and rewrite their letters until satisfied.  This does not mean that the letters are contrived, but on the contrary, it means that they are thoughtful and sincere. It conveys that the object of your affections is made resident in your heart and deserves more than a hastily scrawled note.

Do not hesitate to use terms of endearment. Praise the qualities that you admire most in them. Give words of appreciation and hopes for the future. Let your Valentine, this year, be one written from the heart in the form of a love letter.

When my mother passed away, my father took the box of love letters he had sent her over the years and burned them. They were for her and no one else. Sometimes I wish I could have read them, but, I understand how private they were. I appreciate how lovely it is to be able to re-read tender words of love in unforeseen moments, when they are most needed.

Happy Valentines Day…
